Fuel-Efficient Aircraft

National Jet Express Fuel Efficient Fleet

At National Jet Express (NJE), sustainability is at the heart of our operations. Since 95% of our carbon footprint comes from fuel emission, our primary focus has been to operate the most fuel efficient aircraft possible.  In 2019 we commenced a fleet renewal program to replace the older fuel guzzling aircraft commonly used in the FIFO industry with modern, low-emission models. Today, NJE’s FIFO fleet comprises only the next generation fuel efficient aircraft, significantly lowering our carbon footprint by up to 30%.

Why the Q400?

  • Lowest fuel consumption per passenger of any turboprop in the industry.
  • Uses 30% less fuel than comparable regional jets, cutting carbon emissions.
  • Equipped with larger propellers operating at lower RPMs for greater efficiency.
  • The majority of NJE’s Q400 fleet are Next Generation (NG) models, offering a more spacious cabin and increased seat capacity — further lowering fuel burn per passenger.
  •

Why the E190

  • NJE operates the Advanced Range variant of the Embraer E190.
  • Designed for longer distances with fewer refuelling stops and faster turnaround times.
  • Up to 15% reduction in CO2 emissions per trip compared to similar FIFO aircraft.
  • Higher cruising speeds and altitudes for improved fuel efficiency.
  •

Besides having the youngest, most fuel efficient fleet in the industry, we are also committed to sustainability in our other areas of operations by making environmentally conscious choices and working with partners, clients, and communities to operate sustainably for the future.

Environmental performance is a core component of NJE’s Management Systems. Our in-house environmental team:

  •       Monitors adherence to our environmental management plan and client requirements.
  •       Acts promptly to reduce environmental hazards and risks to as low as reasonably practicable.

Since 2013, NJE has been entrusted with protecting the biodiversity of Barrow Island, a Class A nature reserve. We conduct Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service–approved screening of all air passengers and freight travelling on our charter flights to this sensitive location.

Management is committed to conducting all activities in full compliance with environmental legislation and standards, aligned with NJE’s Environmental Management System (conforming with the requirements of AS/NZS ISO 14001).

To run an environmentally responsible business, we focus on three pillars of sustainability:

Reduce & Recycle

  • Reduced food waste, non-recyclables and plastic used in catering
  • Reduced landfill waste through new waste management system
  • Reduced corporate travel through increased use of technology
  • Reduced risk to biosecurity: NJE operates the only AQIS approved private screening point at Perth Airport
  • Reduced fuel burn:
    • AVTUR – by flying the most efficient routes and minimising APU use where possible
    • DIESEL – minimising fuel uplift at remote sites resulting in reduced carbon emissions from fuel resupply trucks

Replace

  • Replacement aircraft: Fleet renewal program with latest generation aircraft that offer lowest emissions in their class
  • Replaced office, base and hangar lighting with energy efficient LED

Innovate

  • Engaging suppliers and using equipment that aligns with our vision and pursuing low emission technologies and initiatives such as carbon offsets and alternative airframe power plants (hydrogen fuel cell technologies)

NJE has reporting obligations under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Act 2007. NJE registered its participation under the Act on 20 October 2023. NJE submitted its second Section 19 report during the 2024 NGER reporting period to the Clean Energy Regulator.
