National Jet Express Indigenous Programs and Commitment to Indigenous Employment

National Jet Express (NJE), via its charter services, operates to and provides connectivity to many Indigenous communities around the network in Australia.

Whilst NJE services are closed charter services, it works with a number of existing clients to provide seat capacity on flights for local Indigenous community members, facilitating travel to major cities

for medical, school and other reasons. NJE would be pleased to work with Harmony to offer similar opportunities to Kalkadoon People.

NJE has also worked via the Commonwealth Government Abstudy program to supply charter services between Horn Island (Torres Straight) and Cairns, Townsville and Rockhampton, transporting students to and from boarding school at the start and finish of each term. These charter services are essential in ensuring connectivity and opportunities for the Torres Strait Island youth to attend schools.

NJE also work with its mining customers to support local schools to visit NJE’s aircraft and crews whilst on the ground.

Given that the provision of aviation services is a highly specialised field, NJE acknowledges the potential limitations in First Nations involvement. However, NJE confirms that, where possible, it is committed to:

  • champion and promote First Nations employment and the use of First Nations suppliers;
  • assess the possibility for First Nations employment and supplier use opportunities on an ongoing basis;
  • proactively consider the engagement of subcontracts that use, or are First Nations Enterprises;
  • and train and develop First Nations employees.

NJE commissioned an artwork at the entrance of its Adelaide private terminal facility. The artwork done by Marra Dreaming depicts the Carrapateena (Kokatha), Port Augusta (Barngarla and Nukunu) and Prominent Hill (Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara) communities and pays respect to the Traditional Owners and their individual spiritual connections to the land. NJE regularly operates services to these 3 communities as part of a long term contract with BHP.

The lines between the communities represent the connections between different Aboriginal groups and how they have co-existed for over 40,000 years.

“The lines running parallel represent the waterways that surround these communities.”

To individualise each community;

  • For Port Augusta: Bangarla – Known for using medicinal plants such as golden wattle and pig face. Nukunu – Known for their sacred rituals and using body markings.
  • For Carrapateena: Kokatha – Black Oak Trees Known for being an important part of Kokatha culture.
  • For Prominent Hill Antakirinja – We will depict the hills which are an important part of their culture both for ceremonies and passing down knowledge. The large wedge-tailed eagle flying over represents National Jet Express.

NJE has also worked with YURRAMA Water brand with NJE’s Catering supplier in Perth, Food Folk. YURRAMA Water is a 100% owned business of Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation with all profits going directly to employment opportunities for Indigenous youth.

Ashurton Aboriginal Corporation (AAC) operate plastic container deposit schemes across the Pilbara region. Due to the low weight of recycled plastic, opportunity exists to scale the deposit scheme across NJE’s regional charter customer in the Goldfields and Pilbara. This will not only increase the funds received by AAC for container deposits but will go back to funding AAC Pilbara based indigenous employment programs.

AAC run Pilbara based indigenous employment programs. Subject to suitability assessment, National Jet Express could work with AAC to establish an aviation ground handling pathway to support the local Aviation ground handling Network.

National Jet Express is proud to partner with like-minded organisations focused on positive social and environmental outcomes for our community.

National Jet Express has an ongoing partnership with BlueSky Social Impact Travel, a Rotary Club of Crawley initiative.

BlueSky provides an opportunity for people to explore regional Western Australia in an environmentally conscious way while supporting local communities and raising money for social impact projects. National Jet Express provides the aircraft and crew for these fundraising flights.

Environmental sustainability is at the centre of every BlueSky project with carbon emissions from flights offset by approximately 200% by planting native forests which reduce the impacts of climate change. Destinations have included Kalgoorlie, Broome, the Pilbara Coast and Kununurra.

We are excited about our partnership with BlueSky and enjoy the opportunity to not only be involved in an initiative that raises funds for charities, but also provides a large injection of cash into many regional communities across Western Australia.
